31 Jan 2003. At Shanklin Beach on the Isle of Wight today, locals found Britain's Royal Navy engaged in special coastal defence training ahead of the firemens' strike, which will take place on Saturday, 1 Feb. Although firemen at only one of the half-dozen fire stations on the island will take part in national strikes, the Navy, supported by the Army and H.M. Coastguard, practiced in the event of chemical objects being found upon the shore. They were equipped with three fire-engines, including a Green-goddess, breathing equipment, at least two chemical-resistant suits and an unusual dousing rig. The Navy officer coordinating the event told me that this was a routine exercise in the light of the current political situation. - Detailed photos available on request.
